Giraffes set sail for Australia

One-year-old Forrest and his half-sister, 16-month-old Ntombi, are crossing the ditch to begin new lives at Australian zoos. Both are from genetically valuable bloodlines, and as part of the Australasian regional breeding programme, it is hoped they will breed in the future. Their seven-day cruise first docks in Tauranga to collect more freight before sailing to Sydney. Once there, the leggy twosome will travel by road to Taronga Western Plains Zoo in Dubbo, central New South Wales. Ntombi will remain at Taronga Western Plains Zoo, while Forrest will be one of the first giraffe to call Australia Zoo home after he completes a quarantine period with Ntombi. Moving giraffes between zoos is a tall order, requiring considerable preparation both prior to boarding, and during the voyage. Both giraffes have been crate trained to enter their 4.2-metre high crates and be as comfortable as possible. They have also been vaccinated, and micro-chipped with identification information. We are hoping that the current settled weather were enjoying will continue and keep the seas smooth which should help the giraffes to find their sea-legs quickly. Forrest and Ntombi have grown up together and seem to enjoy each others company. Theyre also very supportive of each other, so completing the trip together and having visual access will bring them added comfort and security, says acting Pridelands team leader Nat Sullivan. The loss of Forrest and Ntombi will be sad for the zoo and in particular we think Rukiya, who is Forrests mother and has cared for Ntombi after the death of her mother Kay earlier this year, will feel their absence. However, their relocation is to diversify bloodlines with future breeding, and we hope Rukiya will also breed again here at the zoo.

Alstead New Hampshire (NH) Real Estate Tour

http://www.alsteadnhrealestate.com Tour Alstead, NH neighborhoods, condominium developments, subdivisions, schools, landmarks, recreational areas, and town offices. Alstead, New Hampshire began in 1735 as one in a line of nine forts intended to protect southwestern New Hampshire from Indian attacks. Alstead was called Newton when it was granted to Samuel Chase and others and was later named for Johann Henrich Alsted, who compiled an early encyclopedia that was popular at Harvard College. The town received its N.H. charter in 1763. Alstead was one of the towns that wavered in its allegiance after the Revolutionary War. It decided to join Vermont in April 1781, but returned to N.H. authority early the next year. Shedd-Porter Memorial Library, built in 1910 in neo-classic revival style, was a gift to Alstead and Langdon by native son John G. Shedd, an associate of Marshall Field's department store in Chicago. Another native-son philanthropist, Charles M. Vilas, gave a large public recreation area, school building and the only carillon in Cheshire County. Marion Nicholl Rawson, chronicler of U.S. arts and crafts, made her home in Alstead. The first paper mill in New Hampshire was established by Ephraim and Elisha Kingsbury in 1793 on Cold River. While Alstead was basically an agricultural community, its streams and ponds once powered a variety of small mills. A turbine water mill at East Alstead is probably the last of its type anywhere in the region. For other town tours visit http://www.virtualhomes.com .
